I drove out of Mungabilly just before five in the morning. Ripper was at Mrs T’s, the campervan was full of petrol, and there were two ten-litre containers of water in the back in addition to the camper’s tanks. I also had two jars of Mrs T’s tomato sauce for Moni. The outback stretched wide and brown on either side of the road. Still no rain. The cattle looked hollow, the gum trees drooped along the dry creek, and the few kangaroos were mainly resting in the shade. But the air was fresh, and a flock of galahs wheeled in the blue sky. To the left of the road, an emu ran with a graceful gait, her feathers bouncing like a Victorian lady’s bustle.

The camper purred along with no sign of the knock in the engine I’d heard before, and the three-hour trip went fast. I listened to news radio, and then when I was closer to the Isa, I switched to a rock station. Moni had given me her address, and I found it easily enough. She lived opposite the hospital in a brick unit, the middle one in a row of them. I found her old Holden at the back, parked the camper alongside, and cut the engine. The units had a small veranda facing the rear. Moni leant on the rail, a mug of something in her hand. She was dressed in the same purple singlet she’d been wearing when she appeared in Mungabilly, but this time it was paired with a ratty pair of cotton shorts that she’d obviously slept in. Her blonde hair was snarled around her face. She was beautiful.

I approached her, and she set the mug down and came down the two steps. And then we were in each other’s arms. Her hair tickled my nose, and she tilted her face up to mine and kissed me. Her hands pushed into my hair, holding me steady, not letting me move. Not that I wanted to. Her tongue thrust into my mouth, and she tasted of coffee. For long moments we remained locked together, and then a door banged elsewhere in the building, and we moved apart. Moni had a goofy grin on her face, and my mouth was wide with smiling.

“Come in,” she said. “Let’s get coffee.”

I grabbed Mrs T’s tomato sauce from the camper and followed her. Her unit was basically one room. A kitchenette against one wall, a twin bed on the far side of some shelving which was used to partition the room. A TV she could watch from the bed, a table, and a couple of chairs. Her laptop sat open on the table. Moni crossed to the kitchenette where there was an American style coffee pot, still half full. She poured me a cup and topped up her own.

“So here you are,” she said. “Welcome to my home. It’s not much, but luckily I don’t spend much time here. I think the Flying Doctor makes the accommodations basic so that we’re happy to get to work.
